♦Critical Repulse: A counter-type sealing ability that Lin automatically employs the first time she is struck by a trait-related attack during combat. Standard strikes (i.e. those not associated with any of the possible traits) do not trigger this ability, with the exception of Viruses – the first successful attack on Lin by a Virus will trigger this ability, regardless of what that attack is. As stated, Lin cannot purposefully activate it; the execution of this ability is completely dependent upon an opponent landing a successful attack (which is something Lin’s ‘dodge first’ combat mentality does not intend to facilitate.) Generally speaking, Critical Repulse manifests as a cylindrical ‘shock column’ (with ‘shock’ in this case referring to a concussive force) with a horizontal range of 5 feet and a maximum height of 10 feet. The initial effect of the cylinder is as its description implies – any individual or object within the range of the cylinder when Critical Repulse is activated is knocked backwards/away from Lin. The impact is inversely related to the physical mass of the individual or object (that is, the heavier or denser something is, the further it is knocked away. Light objects/individuals are not as affected, though they are still pushed back.) Damage done by this move is almost exclusively environmental related (i.e., if an individual is knocked into a rock or someone else’s attack.) It should be noted that Critical Repulse activates on any trait related attack – including ranged attacks (though obviously the ranged attacker need not fear being knocked back.) Whether melee or ranged, triggering Critical Repulse temporarily seals the individual’s trait, as per Lin’s own Null trait. Unlike Runescape Void, Critical Repulse need not be ‘specific’ to seal the trait; the sealing is based completely on the trait identity of the attacker. A trait sealed by Critical Repulse remains sealed for a 10 minute duration and manifests on Lin’s person in a way specific to that trait as follows:
@fire – creates an aura of flame around Lin with a range of a scant 6 inches. This flame may inflict minor fire damage to those that Lin touches, but does not adversely affect her. Additionally, her wings become fully visible, with a red-orange coloration.
@aqua – creates a blizzard like effect around Lin, obscuring her form but also reducing her vision and movement speed. The blizzard also imparts reduced ‘natural’ vision on anyone entering its area of effect, but is otherwise harmless. Additionally, her wings become visible with a powder-white coloration.
@gale – creates a rather ferocious tornado around Lin, sending skirt, shirt, and hair flapping about chaotically and granting unnecessary fan service to those on the battlefield. She is unable to move while trapped in the tornado and thus, open to attempted melee attacks. Projectile attacks sent her way, however, will be ripped away by the vortex.
@earth – encases Lin in an impenetrable cocoon of rock, rendering her protected but unable to move or otherwise interact with anything for the duration. This includes ‘telepathic’ communication; she is essentially ‘blacked out.’
@lightning – the electric charge manifests directly on Lin’s wings, turning them a brilliant gold and temporarily doubling her flight speed. Unfortunately, her energy expenditure for flight is quadrupled while this effect is in play.
@blank – will manifest as any of the Fire/Aqua/Gale/Earth/Lightning listed above based on the element type of the attack that triggered Critical Repulse.
@null – creates a temporary paradox, rendering Lin invisible to ‘natural’ vision. Altered vision or scanning devices may still be able to ‘see’ her, but she appears as an ‘anomaly.’ (For example, Miranda’s visor picks her up as a ‘phantom’ akin to a ghost.) She is still there physically and may still attack/be attacked as normal.
@mimic – will manifest as any of the above elemental effects or the Null effect, based on the ability that triggers Critical Repulse. (For example, if Miranda copied a fire trait ability, then used it on Lin and triggered Critical Repulse, Lin would manifest the Fire aura while sealing Miranda’s Mimic trait for the duration.)
@viruses – a special case, when Critical Repulse is triggered by a Virus’ attack, all distortion created by that Virus is temporarily sealed. In this situation, Lin herself becomes the ‘central’ distortion and she appears to disappear from the battlefield. In ‘reality’ (a term used hesitantly), she is transported to the ‘nth dimension’: a pseudospace of non-reality whose shape and form is left up to the Virus’ player’s discretion. This tends to be psychologically de-stabilizing to the girl (again, at the discretion of the Virus player), rendering her, at the very least, terribly disoriented upon her return to battlefield.
Again, the duration of both the sealing of the enemy’s trait and the above self-effects is 10 minutes. Allies or enemies with the Null trait can, theoretically, nullify Lin’s self-effects as well. Critical Repulse can only be used once per battle situation (though, if the admins allow, additional ‘charges’ may possibly be purchased in the IC/OOC shop) and may not be activated again for 1 hour.[/ul]
SUMMARY: Formerly caged, now lost to freedom; borne on wings of steel, but when will she learn to fly on her own?
RELATIONSHIPS:
♦ Rasputin Konstantinov: - Purchaser, Provider, Tormentor –Deceased, killed by Lin immediately following the conversion. Rasputin (named after the ‘crazy’ Russian monk of the same name) was the Russian nobleman that purchased both Aylin and Miranda and was responsible for every bit of their known history. See the History section for more details.[/ul]
INVENTORY:
[/ul]HISTORY: Designation: Primary Medium (“successor.”) For initial reference, see the History section of Miranda Cashmere’s profile. Like Miranda, Aylin was also a victim of human trafficking. She was kidnapped (age: 14) on her way home from school one soggy August afternoon in a suburb of San Diego, California and sold the very next day to Rasputin Konstantinov for the tidy sum of $450,000 U.S. dollars. She was selected from a condensed list of targets primarily due to the fact that both of her parents were members of Mensa International, and her own mean IQ score was allegedly 166. Other stated defining characteristics (based on Konstantinov’s notes) were hair and eye color and supposed environmental exposures, though these ‘exposures’ were not listed in the literature. Other information listed in the documents confirms her parent’s identities as computer programmers working in Silicon Valley, a blood type of AB negative, a ‘superior’ genetic code (though the specifics defining ‘superior’ are never listed), and, as per Miranda, verification of being disease-free. But these are merely the statistics.
Aylin, herself, in direct contradiction to her IQ scores, had terrible grades in school prior to her kidnapping, and had actually been held back a grade in middle school both for poor scores and for being a ‘severe disruption in the classroom.’ Though she was never one to get in any significant trouble, she tended to draw bad attention to herself as a class clown, rarely associated with classmates outside of school, and spent the majority of her time with computer games and dolls. This may be directly related to the fact that her parents were located in a completely different city, and she was primarily raised by a part-time nanny and prototype A.I.s, with much of her day-to-day needs being met by either at-home delivery services or automated portions of the house in which she lived. She claims that her parents didn’t even notice that she had been kidnapped and, despite the circumstances she was thrust in to, fully believes that they wouldn’t have cared if they had noticed and that she would not go back, even if she could turn back time. She also claims that she doesn’t care and, having been separated from them for 14 years (4 years in capitivity plus the 10 years post-conversion) this has probably become true.
Under Konstantinov’s ‘care’, Aylin went through trauma that was more ‘refined’ than those experienced by Miranda. She was ‘the second coming’ and had been chosen to be the ‘avatar’ of the goddess Nuit, though she was not made aware of this until she mustered up the courage to pull such information from Miranda’s memory files. In her own words, “My previous life was light and dark. I can’t see in the dark so… I can’t tell you what happened. Some of it wasn’t pleasant. A lot of the time there was only Miranda, ya know? But occasionally, there were tastes of freedom. That’s what got me through.” (This is a recording that is still contained within Miranda’s data files.) These ‘tastes of freedom’ were social gatherings where Aylin played the role of the ‘prize girl’ on the arm of the nobleman – she was seen, she was fawned over, and then, quite quickly, she was taken away. Supposedly, these events were meant to ‘balance’ her – a mistake Konstantinov believed he had made with Miranda and which he attributed to the other girl’s ‘failure’ status.
Everything changed with the conversion, of course. When it occurred, Aylin, Miranda, and Konstantinov were together, with the nobleman in the process of setting up some elaborate ritual that neither girl had any information on. Aylin happened to be the first to realize the change, to recognize that she had become different… and was the first to act. Less than a minute after the conversion, the collection of three had been reduced to two, ‘freedom’ was now literally in her grasp, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Of course, that is a particularly bland way of putting it. With Miranda in tow, Aylin – now going by the shortened version of her name, ‘Lin’ – did everything she could to take full advantage of her freedom. The pair has literally been on the move since day one, skirting ‘collections’ (a term she derisively applies to the virtual world’s version of cities) out of a non-verbalized fear of once again being ‘captured and caged.’ It is reflection on her pre-captivity life that has spawned her ‘always student’ self-identity, perhaps out of a combination of regret for not taking education seriously when she was originally able and access to her ‘living database’ of a tool, Miranda. She has rationalized that, in the digital world, knowledge truly is power and has tirelessly dedicated herself to learning as much as she can. Recently, however, she has come to the realization that education and, furthermore, the proper application of knowledge, cannot be facilitated by one’s self, particularly when one has no expertise of their own. As such, she has finally decided to ‘infiltrate’ the ‘collections.’ ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained’ as the saying goes.
SEE THE LIGHT:
- Adaptive – Lin has a quick mind and is able to process information at a rapid rate. Because of this, she is good at analyzing her current situation and adapting her goals, plan of action, ect., to better suit what ‘fate has dealt her.’ Additionally, she grasps and can apply new concepts quickly. She could be suited to the role of strategist, if she becomes part of a group.
- Agile/Natural Tumbler – When it comes to combat, the name of the game for Lin is ‘Bait, Dodge, and Counter.’ She is an elusive little ‘gnat’, very difficult to hit in melee combat whether her dodging takes the form of somersaults, cartwheels, sidesteps, or the occasional accidental slip-fall-and-recover. This is quite useful to her, since her offensive capabilities, in most cases, might as well not exist.
- Lifelong Student – Lin wants to learn and is always on the lookout for subjects that are foreign to her. There are very few subjects that fail to spark her interest. It is the idea of ‘always being a student’ that partially drives her cosmetic decision to always dress in a school uniform. Unfortunately, she seems to take the ‘jack-of-all-trades, master of none’ state of being currently.
- Confidently Stubborn –So long as she has an audience, she is hard-pressed to be convinced that a negative situation is ‘unwinnable.’ Doesn’t give up easily. (This is not so much the case when she is operating by herself.)
- (Hidden/Unexplored Talent) Precision and Accuracy – Has the eye of a marksman and the mental capacity to make parameter adjustments on-the-fly. Would make a magnificent sniper if she was taught how to use a firearm. Does not have the physical strength to apply this to the bow and arrow or thrown weaponry. As of her first appearance, this has not been explored.
- Has no martial training on first appearance. That is, she does not know how to properly use standard weapons (melee or firearms), nor does she have any physical fighting training (be it brawling, martial arts, ect.) This is subject to change, assuming someone is inclined to teach her.
- Has a bit of a confrontational personality and employs liberal use of sarcasm in her speech. Even if she doesn’t mean to her words sometimes come out as harsh and quite critical, which can lead to others developing negative opinions of her.
- Frail – this attribute includes both her physical status (it doesn’t take much to incapacitate her if she is hit in combat) and her ego. Although she rarely shows it in public, being shown up, being proven wrong, losing, and other such examples of ‘things not going her way’ turns her into a crybaby in private. This trait indirectly contributes to her ‘always a student’ self-identity, as ‘losing’ scenarios reinforce that ‘she knows nothing.’ Furthermore, this trait, in turn, leads to…
- Vengeful – she holds a grudge like no other. Although she may not always immediately act upon it, rarely does she truly ‘let things slide’ when she feels that she is wronged. Typically, she prefers complicated revenge schemes. On a luckier note, she has a capacity problem when it comes to vengeance – if she has multiple ‘vengeance’ plans in motion, they tend to cancel each other out due to her preferred complexity. This situation is usually the only situation where she will choose to ‘let things slide.’
- Is automatically suspicious of members of the male gender, which may make interactions strained
- Socks. Perhaps a peculiar trait, but socks are her favorite article of clothing. This also includes stockings of the knee length and mid-thigh length variety.
- Being ‘right’, whether people are just playing lip-service to her or she is genuinely correct.
- Vanilla and coconut (two favorite scents, formerly also flavors but since eating is no longer an activity to engage in…)
- Objects that are pink or purple (which makes one wonder why her uniform is always either green/white or blue/white in color scheme…)
- Having the opportunity to learn directly from an expert or specialist (obviously)
- Being wrong/not having correct information
- Being talked down to/condescending words or tones directed her way
- Only being able to do maintenance ‘engineering’ and programming on Miranda. She does not have the experience or expertise to do more than ‘keep Miranda going’, a problem she would very much like to remedy at some point
- Sheep and/or goats – literally, she is, for some unknown reason, terrified of these creatures
- Catcalls/shrill whistles… otherwise known as lewd attempts to get her attention; included in this is being called ‘baby’, ‘sweetie’, ‘honey’ ect., by individuals that she is either a)not even remotely familiar with or b)definitely not attracted to.
- Returning to the enslaved/caged life that she lived in prior to the conversion
- Being trapped in an enclosed space with a multitude of sheep and/or goats
- Information blackout – a scenario in which she has only her memory to rely on, that is, with no access to references of any kind
- Having to sacrifice Miranda in order to survive – she’ll do it, but it scares her to death
- Achieving ‘perfect security’ – a personal ‘Nirvana’ concept, in which she would never have to worry about running out of energy or the risk of combat, and could learn/research ad infinitum
- Regaining the sense of taste – she severely misses vanilla ice cream
- Possibly exploring the thing called ‘love’ – she’s not quite sure of this one just yet
OOC NAME: Erm… I have always used the name ‘Kai’ as my online alias… but seeing as how there already is one here, I shall compromise the spelling and make it ‘Ky’, as per the Guilty Gear character. Since we are not ‘speaking’ the name, I think that’s acceptable. If not, please let me know and I’ll come up with something else. ^_^;
AGE: Add 10 to Aylin’s age or the same age as Miranda
GENDER: Male
HOW YOU FOUND US: The ProBoards RP ad forum, randomly clicking on things in hopes of finding an active board ;
OTHER CHARACTERS: Miranda Cashmere
ANYTHING ELSE: Although at start Miranda and Lin come as a pair, this does not always have to be the case. It’s probably stating the obvious, but I don’t want to make it seem like they are inseparable. Lin is Miranda’s primary operator, but it is certainly feasible that she will ‘loan’ Miranda to allies that she makes over time.
