if death meant just leaving the stage long enough to change costume and come back as a new character... would you slow down? or speed up?
You open your eyes. Your heart is racing, sweat is streaming down your face. After a few seconds, you realize that everything was only a dream. That awful feeling of dread as you felt you were about to die still lingered but as you take deep breaths, you begin to calm down. You try to bring yourself to a sitting position but it seems impossible. Thinking that this is still remnants of the dream, you roll over onto your stomach, raising yourself up with your hands, but... they aren't hands anymore. Not human hands, anyway.
Whether you see paws, feathers, insect legs, or even flippers, you are no longer human. Bringing them to your face, you feel an alien surface. You try to scream, but a sound that you couldn't make before comes out instead, a bark or squack or screech. Frantic, you leap to your feet, making awful sobbing noises. How could this be? The last thing you remember is pain. Could it be possible that you have died and somehow been molded into something new? You look around yourself, noticing the tall hedges surrounding you. Turning around, you see the large steel gates behind you, latched with a padlock that you know you can't break.
Where are you? You've landed in Disengage, a place where souls go when they die. Not every soul though; Disengage is a sort of limbo between the worlds where souls are encompassed in the forms of animals. The animal depends on the person in question. Those who make it to Disengage have one way out. If they find out the reason why they were brought to limbo instead of going on, they can leave. If they cannot... let's just say they'll be hanging out with us for a while. The longer you stay here though, the more you forget about your past life.
Not everything in Disengage is kind-hearted. Some things that live here can kill, even though you're already dead. They can take away your will to leave and you become one of them. Will you make it out unscathed?
